A Sculptural Light with a Transformative Glow

The Beacon Floor Lamp is a striking blend of art and engineering, meticulously handcrafted to enhance your living space. Designed by artist-engineer Dan Morrison, this limited-edition piece offers a unique dual lighting function—effortlessly shifting between a standard lamp and an uplighter to suit your mood and setting.

  • Two Lighting Modes: When closed, the shade creates intricate light patterns, adding a warm, ambient glow. Open it, and the lamp transforms into an uplighter, casting a soft, expansive illumination.

  • Exquisite Craftsmanship: Constructed from oak, brushed aluminium, and stainless steel, with a machined brass dimmer knob at waist height for seamless control.

Key Features:

  • Hand-engineered in a limited edition of 15

  • Oak, aluminium, brass, and stainless steel construction

  • Stands at approximately 1.7 meters

  • Four upward-facing, replaceable 240V LED bulbs (1700 lumens total)

  • Shade opens smoothly with a gentle squeeze of both hands

Inspired by Nature & Mechanics

Echoing the forms of tulips, flames, and hill-top beacons, the Beacon Floor Lamp combines organic beauty with industrial precision. The design also draws on architectural elements, evoking the rhythm of slatted structures and the gesture of clasped hands.

Background

This design process began with thoughts of a single stemmed flower such as a tulip or red rose. This was overlaid with ideas of an upright burning match and engineered to open up like a flower or two unclasping hands.

The current version of the floor lamp uses two (or more) upward pointing spotlights to illuminate a central orb, giving it the look of a planet, oyster or jewel.

The original version uses six upward pointing spotlights which are mounted on industrial springs and wrapped in hand-beaten copper sheets giving echoes of stamen in a flower, or flowers within a flame. The gold wires that feed these spotlights have been left visible and interwoven like vines channelling the light up the stem.

The simpler table-top lamp uses a single Edison filament bulb mounted on the top of the aluminium pole to position it centrally in the wooden slatted shade.

We saw Dan’s work about 3 years ago in London, and we’ve always wanted a piece. Earlier this year we worked with Dan on a Beacon lamp for our new flat. The process was just lovely, and watching the videos of Beacon being made was really special. When Dan delivered the Beacon, and we got to see it, it was just fantastic. Every time we see Beacon we just smile. It’s a fantastic piece of craftsmanship, that lights up the corner of our living room beautifully. We just need to find another excuse for one more of Dan’s creations
